Welcoming a newborn into your life is a moment filled with joy and wonder. Capturing those first days through photography creates lasting memories you will cherish forever. Yet, preparing for a newborn photography session can feel overwhelming. Knowing what to expect and how to get ready helps make the experience smooth and enjoyable for both you and your baby. This guide offers practical tips to prepare for a stress-free and memorable newborn photography session, covering everything from what to bring to how to prepare your little one.
Choose the Right Time for the Session
Newborn photography sessions work best within the first three weeks after birth, although the ideal window is 10 to 14 days. During this period, babies tend to sleep deeply and curl naturally, making it easier to pose them safely and comfortably. Scheduling your session early gives you flexibility and ensures your photographer can capture those delicate moments.
If your baby is older than three weeks, don’t worry, as a experienced photographer I can still create beautiful images, but the poses and timing might differ.
Prepare Your Baby for the Session
A calm and content baby makes the session smoother. Here are some ways to prepare your newborn:
Feed your baby right before the session to encourage sleepiness. You can do this at home or right as you arrive at the studio. You are welcome to arrive half an hour early to allow for this. The studio is a breastfeeding friendly place, if you are able to have an expressed feed please do bring it along, sometimes a little sip of milk is all that is needed to settle baby.
Dress your baby comfortably preferably with as few layers as possible. A button/zip up babygro is best, think things that don't have to go over baby's head. Keep your baby warm with extra blankets.
Give your baby a warm bath before leaving for the shoot baths helps with calming baby down and make them nice and sleepy. Please do not apply any moisturizers or Vaseline to your baby's skin. Baby's skin will look perfect, that is part of my job in post.
Bring a pacifier even if your baby doesn't uses one, as it can soothe them during the shoot.
Avoid overstimulation before the session by keeping the environment quiet and calm. There is no need to keep baby awake. Rather stick to routine as sleep breeds sleep.
Remember, newborns have their own rhythms. Be patient and allow time for feeding, comforting, and changing as needed.
What to Bring to the Session
Packing the right items ensures the session goes smoothly without interruptions. Here’s a checklist of essentials:
Diapers and wipes for quick changes.
Extra clothes for your baby in case of messes.
Comfort items like a pacifier or a soft toy.
Feeding supplies if you plan to nurse or bottle-feed during the session.
A change of clothes for parents in case of spills or accidents.
A small snack for yourself to stay energized. Tea/coffee/water is provided.
I provide wraps, props and outfits, for your baby. All styling will be discussed ahead of your shoot and there is nothing you need to bring, but if there is something sentimental you would like to include in the shoot, by all means bring it along and I will do my best to incorporate it.
The Studio is a Comfortable Environment
Newborns respond well to warmth and softness.
The room is kept warm in winter & cool in summer around 27°C to help your baby stay comfortable.
Please keep noise to a minimum by silencing phones and keeping voices down.
There is place for you to sit for feeding or holding your baby between shots.
Make yourselves at home I want you to leave the shoot feeling relaxed and happy.
A calm environment helps your baby relax and allows me to work efficiently.

Communicate Your Preferences with the Me
Clear communication ensures your vision comes to life. Before the session:
Share any specific poses or themes you would like.
Discuss any family members or siblings who will join.
I will ask you about your baby’s temperament and feeding schedule.
This preparation helps avoid surprises and makes the session more enjoyable.

Plan for Feeding and Breaks
Newborn sessions can last from two to four hours, depending on the package you have booked and your baby’s needs. Plan for feeding and breaks to keep your baby comfortable:
Feed your baby before the session to encourage sleep.
Allow time for diaper changes and soothing.
Be patient if your baby needs extra time to settle.
A relaxed pace benefits everyone and results in better photos. My patience with newborns is endless. My years of experience mean I have strategies in place to help baby sleep and keep them comfortable. My newborn shoots are always baby led, first.
Involve Family Members Thoughtfully
Including parents and siblings can add warmth and connection to your photos. Here are tips for involving family:
Dress family members in coordinating but not matching outfits.
Keep colors neutral or soft to keep the focus on the baby.
I will guide you into simple poses that feel natural and comfortable.
Let siblings bring a favorite toy to help them feel at ease.
Siblings, especially under 3 can be challenging. Be patient. We will get there in the end.

Trust my Expertise
I have years of experience handling babies safely and creatively. Trust my guidance on posing, lighting, and timing. I know how to capture your baby’s unique personality while keeping safety a priority.
If you feel uncertain, ask questions before and during the session. I want to make you feel comfortable and supported.
